Spring color palettes

Six fresh schemes, five colors each, every hex a click away. Ordered dark to light.

Spring is the hardest of the four seasons to do without it turning saccharine. The reason is that the obvious moves - high-key pinks, yellow-greens, a lot of white - all push lightness up at once, and a palette where everything is light has no structure left. The ones below all keep at least one genuinely dark color, usually a leaf or moss green, so the pale blossom tones have something to sit against.

  • New leaf

  • Blossom

  • Meadow

  • Morning garden

  • Peach and pear

  • Wisteria

Yellow-green is the hue that decides whether a spring palette reads as fresh or as unwell. Anything between roughly #A8C000 and #C8D400 goes sickly on a screen very quickly, especially next to warm neutrals. Pull it toward blue - a #7BA05B rather than a #A8C000 - and the whole scheme steadies. If you want the acid note, use it once, small, and never for a surface.
