How to choose a restaurant name

Say it out loud first. Most people will hear your name before they see it, from a friend or over the phone, so it has to survive being repeated. If you need to spell it, or if two people read it two ways, keep looking.

Then test it against the place. A name should hint at what you serve or how it feels, and a guest should not be surprised on arrival: The Velvet Spoon promises something different from The Hungry Otter. Avoid tying yourself to a street, a single dish or a trend if you might move or change the menu.

Keep it short enough for a sign, a receipt and an Instagram handle. Two or three words is plenty, and a name that starts with a common word like "The" is harder to find in a list than one with a distinct first word.

What to check before you commit

The generator combines words at random, so it cannot know whether a name is already in use. Before you order a sign, work through this list:

  • Search it with your town. A place nearby with the same name will confuse your guests and may object.
  • Check your business register. Most states and countries let you search registered names online for free.
  • Search trademarks. In the US that is the USPTO's trademark search. A restaurant in another state can still hold the rights, so ask a lawyer if you are unsure.
  • Look for the domain and handles. Check the web address and social names together, and accept a small change such as adding "kitchen" if the exact one is gone.

Restaurant name ideas by style

Cozy and local names lean on home and the seasons, like Juniper Kitchen or Hearth & Vine. They suit neighborhood places and family kitchens.

Modern and minimal names are one or two plain words, like Ember Table or Oak & Ash. They suit small menus and open kitchens.

Classic and elegant names sound established, like Brass Lantern Bistro or The Grand Larder. They suit a dining room people dress up for.

Casual and fun names are easy to remember, like The Lucky Radish or Tin Pig Tavern. They suit burgers, noodles, food trucks and anywhere loud.

Cafe and bakery names sound like the morning, like Morning Crumb or The Rolling Pin Cafe.

All free tools
How do I come up with a name for my restaurant?

Start from what is true about the place: the food, the neighborhood, a family name, or the mood. Generate a few sets in the style closest to it, copy anything you would be happy to say on the phone, then try your favorites on people who have not heard them.

Can I include my own name or cuisine?

Yes. Type one word or a short phrase in the first box, such as Maria, Tacos or Seafood, and most of the results will carry it.

Are these names free to use?

The generator costs nothing and does not claim any rights, but it cannot tell you whether another business already uses a name. Check your local business register, a trademark search and the web address before you commit. A short block list stops a few famous brands, but it is not a trademark check.

Does this use AI?

No. It joins hand-picked words in your browser, so results appear at once and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Is it only for restaurants?

It also works for cafes, bakeries, bars, food trucks and catering. Use the Cafe and bakery style for the morning trade, and add a word like Truck or Catering to the first box.

Can I build a website for my restaurant here?

Yes. Siter.io is a website builder with restaurant templates you can make your own. It has no online ordering or checkout, so link to your ordering page or a phone number.

I have a name. How do I make a logo for it?

Type it into the logo maker, start from an idea you like, and download it as an SVG or a PNG.
