Framer vs Wix, from a designer’s point of view

Framer is priced per site and Wix is priced per plan

Framer’s $10 Basic is the cheapest headline on this page, and it is charged per site. Three client sites is three subscriptions, and every editor beyond the workspace owner is $20 a month on top, or $10 for a content-only seat. That halved in June 2026, so it costs less than it did, but it is still a per-head line item.

Wix’s $17.77 Light includes two site collaborators, and the Studio ladder starts at three. If you are one designer with one site, Framer is cheaper. If you are running several, do the arithmetic before the feature comparison.

The first Wix decision is which Wix

Framer is one editor. Wix is two, and they are not tiers of each other. The classic Wix Editor is what most people mean by Wix, billed on Light, Core, Business and Business Elite. Wix Studio is the designer and agency product, billed on Basic, Standard, Plus and Elite, with its own pricing page.

This matters more than a naming quirk, because the two things a designer would actually shop for — breakpoints and the Figma plugin — exist only in Studio. Anyone comparing Framer against the classic Wix Editor on design capability is comparing the wrong Wix.

One says no, the other says nothing

Wix states that a site must run on its servers, because the platform “does not support external hosting since it uses Wix’s proprietary technology”. CMS collections come out as CSV and blog posts cannot be exported to another platform at all. That is a clear no, and you can plan around it.

Framer’s pricing page documents no code export either way. That is not the same claim, and it should not be read as one. If the ability to take the built site elsewhere matters to you, it is a question to put to Framer before you commit, not an assumption to make from a comparison page.

Both Figma imports have conditions

Framer imports a Figma design one way, and the interactions and responsive behaviour are rebuilt in Framer afterwards. Wix’s plugin, in Studio only, brings across frames, sections, stacks, containers, text with its typography, colours, custom fonts and images under 250kb — but menus and forms arrive as plain text and stop working, buttons convert only if they are text with a fill colour, and videos, galleries and input elements are not recognised at all. It is one page at a time with no re-sync.

Neither is a handoff. Both are a head start on a rebuild, which is worth knowing before you promise a client a date.

Is Wix free?

There is a free plan and it publishes a real, public site. It puts Wix ads on the page, gives you a siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress address, and allows 500MB of storage and 1GB of bandwidth. A custom domain and removing the ads both need a paid plan. Framer’s free plan also publishes, to a framer.website subdomain, and lists 1,000 pages there against 30 once you move to Basic.

How much does Wix cost?

Wix Editor runs from $17.77 a month on Light to $159.77 on Business Elite, quoted as yearly subscriptions paid in full. Wix Studio is a separate ladder, which read from Europe starts at EUR 12 a month. Wix’s own footnote says prices and currency vary by location and that USD figures are displayed for reference only, so treat the dollar column as indicative. Framer’s Basic is $10 a month billed yearly, charged per site.

Which is better, Framer or Wix?

They are not really competing. Framer is better at the things a designer is judged on — motion, layout control, coming out of Figma. Wix is better at the things a small business needs — taking payments, booking appointments, sending invoices, and a content model that goes to millions of items. Pick by which of those describes the site.

What’s the difference between Framer and Wix?

Framer began as a design tool and grew publishing around it, so the canvas, the motion and the breakpoints are the product. Wix began as a website builder for small businesses and grew a designer product, Wix Studio, alongside the original editor. The practical differences are that Framer charges per site and bills editor seats separately, and that Wix has no export of any kind while Framer’s pricing page simply does not say.

Why do designers switch from Wix to Framer?

We have no data on how many actually do, and neither does anyone else publishing a number. The three documented reasons people give are all checkable: the classic Wix Editor has no breakpoint model of the kind Framer is built on, the Figma plugin exists only in Wix Studio so half of Wix users do not have it, and Wix has no way to export a built site. Whether those matter depends on whether the site is design work or a business.

When should I use Framer instead of Wix?

When the site is a portfolio, a product page or a launch site where the design and the motion are the point, when you are working from a Figma file, and when there is nothing to sell or schedule. Once the site needs a store, a booking calendar or invoicing, Framer’s pricing page stops documenting what you need and Wix starts.

Framer assumes you will keep designing in Framer. Wix assumes the website is a business with a design on top.
